Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
