This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
