Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these drugs should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
