European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
