Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
